Made a proposal on a system replacement and was told that I was $ 4000 higher than the competition. I informed the homeowner that was fine, because you have to look at the differences…
Other Guys quoted a 4 ton G**dman AC/80% Furnace system
PFE30 proposed a Manual J sized American Standard Dual Fuel system with IAQ Thermostat
Other Guys quoted R22 refrigerant (FREON)
PFE30 proposed a R410a refrigerant (2010 compliant)
The PFE30 system would be correctly sized to remove MORE water from the air and provide more comfort, As such, its operating cost would be 25% less. The homeowner would have the option of either “free” heat in the winter or natural gas heat. It would be their choice to chose one or go back and forth. PFE30 would install a $ 350 Honeywell IAQ touch-screen thermostat. PFE30 would be installing the #1 rated, field-tested, time-proven equipment.
The homeowner was leaning toward builder type equipment, even considering ordering the equipment from an internet company like AC Direct. Upon inquiring about the system, the homeowner wanted to order a 95% furnace for the house. Big problem! That furnace requires special vent plumbing that would require $ 1500 in carpentry and roofing work. Also, no local equipment supplier will warranty the equipment, because doing so cuts out their existing customer base.
Hmm, $ 1500 in additional work, no warranty, installed by no reputable contractor- more than likely, future expense, $ 3000 or more, after 1.5 years when the refrigerant changes and either the coil or outside unit fails and you can’t get the “old” equipment any more!
I think the mail-order company will warranty the equipment. Figure out how to do that from 500 miles away?
Did I mention higher utility bills ($1000 or so, over 4 years) and less comfort (higher humidity)?
Summary (over 4 years): $ 1500 Carpentry+$ 3000 equipment+$1000 = $ 5200 vs $ 4000 !
